Refrigerated freight is unforgiving. A trailer of produce, seafood, pharmaceuticals, or frozen goods has a narrow temperature window, and once the cargo drifts outside it for long enough, the damage is done and cannot be reversed. What makes reefer loads especially fraught is that they carry two risks at once: the freight can spoil quietly from a temperature failure, and it can be stolen — refrigerated loads of food and pharma are high-value targets. That value is part of why cargo theft has grown more costly overall, with Verisk CargoNet estimating losses of roughly $725 million in 2025, a 60% jump over the prior year, as thieves increasingly chase high-value freight (Verisk CargoNet, January 2026). What reefer temperature monitoring actually means

Reefer temperature monitoring is the continuous, remote tracking of the conditions inside a refrigerated trailer or container throughout transit, reported in near real time rather than read off a gauge at delivery. At its most basic it records the air temperature. A capable system does more: it watches the setpoint versus the actual temperature, tracks how the two diverge over time, and raises an alert the moment the load begins to drift toward its limit — while there is still time for a driver to respond, a dispatcher to reroute, or a receiver to be warned.

Why the reefer's own gauge can mislead

Every refrigerated unit has its own controller and a temperature readout, so it is tempting to assume the display on the front of the trailer tells the whole story. It rarely does. That reading usually reflects the air at the return sensor near the unit, which can look correct even while product deep in the load, or stacked against a warm wall, sits well outside range. A reefer can also be set to the wrong temperature, run out of fuel, throw a fault, or enter a defrost cycle at the wrong moment — and a healthy-looking gauge says nothing about any of it. Monitoring the load, rather than trusting the unit's self-report, is what closes that blind spot.
