Cargo Tamper Detection: Catching Interference Before It Becomes a Loss

A broken seal discovered at the dock is a loss you already own. The goal of tamper detection isn't to prove what happened after the fact — it's to catch the door opening in the moment, while you can still respond.

For decades, cargo tamper protection meant a numbered bolt seal and a hope. A shipper crimps a seal on the container doors, records the number, and the receiver checks that the same number is intact on arrival. If the seal is broken or swapped, you know the load was compromised — but you know it at the very end, when the truck is already at the dock and whatever was taken is long gone. A tamper-evident seal is a verdict, not a warning.

The stakes behind that gap keep rising. Verisk CargoNet's analysis (reported January 2026) estimated roughly $725 million in U.S. cargo theft losses for 2025, a jump of about 60% over the prior year, with an average loss near $273,990 per event. A meaningful share of those losses involve loads that were opened, sampled, or emptied somewhere along the route — at a truck stop, a drop lot, or during a staged "inspection" — long before anyone checked a seal number.

Why "seal intact at delivery" isn't enough

Two problems undermine the seal-only approach. The first is timing: verification happens at the destination, so even a perfect catch gives you no chance to intervene. The second is sophistication. Experienced cargo thieves defeat seals — cutting and re-crimping, swapping in a duplicate, or entering through a roof or side panel that never touches the door seal at all. The seal comes back "intact" while the load is short.

What's missing is knowledge of the event itself: the moment a door actually opened, where the trailer was, and whether that opening was expected.
